Kurt, 93

Kurt, aged 93, is a Stay Active client who lives at home alone in the Inner West. Kurt has led a very active life, residing in many countries around the world, but noticed in recent years that his balance had been getting “worse and worse”.Kurt wants to continue to live independently and hopes to Stay Active.

Kurt was referred to Stay Active in October 2024 by his Home Care Package provider, which allows Kurt to fund his exercise physiology sessions through his home care package. Tom, one of Stay Active’s exercise physiologists, has visited Kurt in his home for sessions twice a week, professionally progressing him through strength, mobility, aerobic, and balance exercises. This intervention has led to significant improvements in his functional ability.

With guidance from Tom, Kurt’s 30 second ‘sit to stand’ score has improved 29%, his ‘timed up and go’ mobility score has improved 29%. Kurt has improved his balance from the tandem stance phase to the single leg stance phase and he has also improved his hand grip strength by 5%.

These improvements are more than just numbers; Kurt continues to thrive at home and reports that his balance is a lot better. These results also suggest that Kurt has largely reduced his risk of falls and his newly gained strength, mobility, and balance should help in completion of his activities of daily living (ADLs).
